The Pain and Palliative Care Unit - Multidisciplinary Oncology Centre,University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) is the premier pain management and palliative medicine facility in South East Nigeria. Founded in 2008, the Unit caters to the palliative care needs of patients with chronic, life-limiting ailments such as chronic pain conditions, cancer, diabetes mellitus, HIV/AIDS and sickle-cell disease.

My wife and I ‘died’ the day we were told she had cancer. This was a woman who had never been sick for one day and had raised our four kids to adulthood. We lost hope and we were reluctant to see any other doctor we had been referred to. We thought no one else had anything to offer. Battling with excruciating pain from the parotid gland tumour for 3 years and yet no respite. But that all changed on attending the outpatient clinic of the Pain and Palliative Care Unit. Great doctors and nurses! It didn’t seem so bad after all. We got comfort, even with her passing.

Being a Palliative Care nurse is a rich and rewarding experience. I recall attending the wake-keep of one of our breast cancer patients. We were treated like royalty. We were given special seats. Her husband disrupted the proceedings to make sure everyone present knew who we were and how our Unit had helped his wife and the family through the illness and after her demise. That brought tears to my eyes.

I never knew it was okay to cry. My little son has a tumour on his face that has eaten into his left eye. People hushed me up whenever my emotions overwhelmed me. This Unit did the opposite. They encouraged me to cry if I felt like and they taught me how to take care of my son during and after his numerous rigorous treatments. I don’t feel so bad anymore.

- While enrolling a 32 year old patient, BO, who had metastatic cancer of the kidneys for end-of-life care, she confided in me that her greatest desire was to fulfil a vow she made to God to be wed to the father of her four year old son. The next day I made the arrangements for our Unit Chaplin to visit her. I was off duty the following day, but got a call later from her spouse, thanking me for the arrangement that eventually made it possible for them to be wed by the priest at her bedside. By Monday morning when I resumed, I discovered she had gone to be with the Lord. Encounters like these in the Pain & Palliative Care Unit give me a sense of fulfilment and spur my commitment to ensure that our patients get the best possible care from us.

Meet Our Team

Our staff consists of friendly and dedicated doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, social workers, volunteers and Chaplin whose exceptional professional conduct towards patients and their families have generated several accolades. Our multidisciplinary team has the experience to care for both children and adults with pain and other symptoms associated with life-limiting illnesses. Many of the staff have professional affiliations and memberships with National and International Oncology and Palliative Care professional bodies such as African Palliative Care Association (APCA), the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Nigeria (APC), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
